Understanding Hyaluronic Acid Based Gels
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration and supporting tissue volume. It is the primary ingredient in most hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers.
On its own, HA binds to water within the skin, helping maintain hydration and tissue elasticity. As we age, naturally occurring HA gradually decreases.
In dermal fillers, HA undergoes a process called cross-linking, in which its molecular chains are bonded together to create a more stable gel. This slows its breakdown by the body, allowing it to provide structure, definition and volume when strategically injected.
Over time, the body naturally breaks down and metabolizes the HA gel. Results typically last approximately 6–18 months, depending on the product, treatment area and individual factors. If necessary, HA-based filler can also be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which accelerates the breakdown of hyaluronic acid.
